Kedah is a state located in the northwestern part of peninsular Malaysia. Kedah borders the state of Perlis to the north, shares an international boundary with Thailand to the northeast, and borders the states of Perak and Penang to the south/southwest. The state covers a total area of over 9,492 km2, consisting of the mainland and the Langkawi islands. The mainland has a relatively flat terrain that is mostly used as rice paddies. Like most of Malaysia, Kedah has a tropical climate with high humidity and a mean annual temperature of roughly 30℃. It is the largest producer of rice in the country, and is known as the “Rice Bowl of Malaysia”.
